Introducing Daniel McNeill – Head of Pre-Construction (EHV)
Daniel’s Journey at eSmart Networks
Daniel joined eSmart Networks in December 2022 as a Framework Manager, where he was responsible for leading and developing an operational programme of work for the rollout of EV charging infrastructure & grid connections.
In December 2023, Daniel was promoted to Senior Pre-Construction Manager, where he led a team managing the pre-construction phase of projects.
Before eSmart Networks, Daniel spent a decade working at NIE Networks, a Distribution Network Operator (DNO). During this time, he worked as a planning engineer, construction delivery engineer, connections interface manager, and was also a senior authorised person up to 33kV.
We asked Daniel to tell us about his new role:
“As of June this year, I moved into a new role, Head of Pre-Construction (EHV). I am now focusing on the pre-construction side of all our extra high-voltage projects. This includes being responsible for the day-to-day management of EHV projects, client liaison, and stakeholder engagement”
What does a typical day look like?
“A typical day for me involves overseeing projects by liaising with external and internal teams, in particular design teams for the project’s pre-construction phase. Focusing on developing new processes and strategies to develop the efficiency of our EHV pre-construction process.
A big part of my role is reviewing the projects and addressing any immediate issues with a solution. This can include internal project meetings and updating the executive management team and other departments to help track actions.
Additionally, I keep clients and external stakeholders up-to-date with the progress of the projects. Typically, I will meet with them regularly to provide updates and discuss any issues that may arise. I believe communication is key to building good relationships with our clients and delivering their projects successfully.
Each day can bring a new challenge, it depends on the project, and it keeps each day exciting as you don’t know what you will be dealing with.
How does your new role differ from your previous one?
“This main difference between my new role and previous roles is that I am now exclusively focused on EHV projects. Instead of working with a larger quantity of smaller HV projects and a team of people, I am now working with a smaller number of complex EHV projects. It involves a deeper specialisation in EHV, strategic thinking, and problem-solving to ensure we are improving our processes and making a better journey for our clients through the pre-construction phase of their projects.”
How do you demonstrate our values?
“I demonstrate eSmart Networks values by challenging assumptions and trying to find more efficient and effective ways to manage the pre-construction phase for our projects.
I also aim to drive continuous improvement, by supporting the team and creating an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their best efforts.
Making it happen and keeping our word are two of our values that are vital, ensuring that we meet our commitment to our clients and that their projects are delivered on time and to the highest standard. This helps to build long-lasting relationships with our clients for the future.”
