Introducing: Marcel Okoro – Commercial Manager
Marcel Okoro’s Journey at eSmart Networks
Marcel Okoro joined eSmart Networks in May 2023, as a Senior Quantity Surveyor, and was recently promoted into the role of Commercial Manager. Before joining eSmart Networks, Marcel worked in the utility sector for four years, prior to that in Rail and Telecoms. Although enjoying this sector, he decided to opt for a new challenge to make him a more rounded commercial professional, which led him to eSmart Networks.
We asked Marcel to tell us about his new role:
“In my new role as a Commercial Manager, I oversee all commercial aspects of our projects from inception to completion, focusing on financial and business operations. My responsibilities include managing client relationships, contributing to contract negotiations, overseeing contract management, handling disputes, and managing procurement processes. I actively collaborate with both Pre-construction and Operations teams to ensure that all projects remain on schedule, stay within budget, and meet our company goals.”
What does a typical day look like?
“My role as a Commercial Manager primarily focuses on cost management, contract management, problem-solving, and team leadership, all of which I find immensely rewarding. Whether it’s addressing on-site changes or preparing tenders, I thrive on the challenges these tasks present. I am involved in a range of activities, from monthly project reporting to negotiating final accounts with clients face-to-face.
What I enjoy most is that no two days are the same. Each project brings unique challenges that require quick adaptation and flexibility. A typical day often begins with reviewing project budgets, addressing project-related issues or assisting the teams. Additionally, I engage in site visits, conduct contract reviews and negotiations, and work on maximising the efficiency of the commercial team and processes.”
How does your new role differ from your previous one?
“The main difference from my previous role is the broader scope—I now oversee all projects instead of focusing on assigned projects. My responsibilities include supporting and training the team to deliver on our commercial goals. I also work closely with the Operational team to ensure successful project delivery. This role involves more oversight and guidance for both the commercial and operations teams, as well as working closely with the Senior Operations Manager and Operations Director.”
How do you demonstrate our values?
“Challenging assumptions resonates strongly with me, as I am always striving to find the most efficient processes for undertaking activities. Throughout my career in various commercial teams, I’ve learned that there is always room for improvement and that challenging the status quo can lead to better solutions that benefit everyone involved.
I understand the importance of teamwork and recognise that we all succeed when we work towards a common goal. In our commercial team, which ranges from Apprentice QS to Commercial Manager, we have varying levels of experience. It is crucial to support one another and grow collectively as a team. Additionally, maintaining strong relationships with the operations team is vital for project success.
Keeping our word and making it happen are as important as our other company values. By committing to tasks and supporting both team members and clients I believe I build trust and establish long-term relationships throughout the delivery of our projects.”
